Davao City Vice Mayor Paolo Duterte does not want his father, Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, to retire from politics after 2016. This after the mayor threatened his supporters that he would retire if they keep on egging him to run for president come 2016.
Mayor Duterte made the threat last week after learning that some village officials are planning a huge rally to urge him to run for president on March 28, his birthday. Duterte also threatened to stop the support he is giving to the village officials who would participate in the said rally.
Despite the threat though, more than a thousand supporters along with barangay captains went on with their rally urging Mayor Duterte to run for the presidency come 2016. The rally happened on Saturday, a day after Mayor Duterte’s 69th birthday.
Asked of his opinion on the Rody for President Movement, Vice Mayor Paolo said credit must be given to the barangay officials who really went out of their way to gather signatures of support. It was learned that the campaign has already gathered more than a million signatures from supporters Davao Region alone.
The young Duterte thanked all supporters of his father but added that no amount of signatures could change the decision of Mayor Duterte not to run for president. He also urged his father not to make good of his threat to retire from politics after 2016 saying that the city still needs a good leader like his father.
Vice Mayor Duterte, who is acting mayor for few weeks now, admitted having difficulty in running the daily activities of the city. He said he is having sleepless nights especially during the Araw ng Dabaw celebration last March 16.
