Duterte’s cabinet slowly forming

The Cabinet of President-elect Rodrigo Duterte is slowly forming just a day after opening the biggest “political jobs fair”.

First to be declared as having clinched prime posts were Atty. Salvador Medialdea as the Executive Secretary, Atty. Salvador Panelo as the Presidential Spokesman, Arturo Tagude as Department of Transportation and Communication Secretary, Sonny Dominguez as Finance Secretary, Jesus Dureza as Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process, Silvestre Bello III as chief peace negotiator for talks with the National Democratic Front, Senator Alan Peter Cayetano as Secretary of Justice or of the Foreign Affairs, Atty. Perfecto Yasay Jr. as officer-in-charge of the Department of Foreign Affairs for one year only, Peter Laurel as Secretary of Education, former North Cotabato governor Emmanuel Piñol as Agriculture Secretary, Gilberto Teodoro as Defense Secretary, and Andrea Domingo as Pagcor chair.

Duterte’s spokesman during the campaign, Peter Laviña, said that 400 top appointive positions are at stake. In total, around 6,000 jobs are available for every Filipinos who are qualified for the available positions. Included in the more than 6,000 posts were jobs in agencies under the departments and positions in corporations either owned or controlled by the government.


In a press conference Monday, Duterte said that he only have one rule for all the applicants — no palakasan. He said that applicants with backers like politicians, high-ranking police and military officials will automatically be dropped from the list.

Duterte said that he will be hiring based on their credentials and their passion to work for the government and of course serve the people.
