In a sudden turn of events, Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte finally agreed to run for president come 2016.
Duterte has been dismissing and turning down invitations for him to run for the highest position in the land saying that he is not qualified for the position and that he does not have the financial capability.
But in an April Fool’s Day statement, Duterte said his sudden change of heart was prompted by a call from no less than US President Barrack Obama who urged him to run for the presidential election on 2016 and that the United States of America would fully back him.
Duterte said the call came as a surprise considering that he is a known critic of the USA.
Aside from Obama, Russian President Vladimir Putin also expressed his desire to have the Philippines be headed by a strong-willed leader like Duterte. Putin made the statement also on April Fool’s Day.
Malacañan meanwhile expressed delight on the sudden turn of events and seems to have made the same opinion as that of Obama and Putin. In a released statement, President Aquino said that they will be studying the possibility of supporting Duterte’s presidential bid and dumping, for the second time around, Mar Roxas’ dream.
Vice President Jejomar Binay readily sent his emissary, a former Davao City official who worked under Duterte before, to ask if indeed Duterte is fully decided in running for the presidency.
Duterte reportedly told the emissary, “what gives you the right to ask me such?”
HAPPY APRIL FOOL’S DAY EVERYONE!
