Another towering legacy of Davao Oriental Governor Corazon N. Malanyaon has just been opened to the public: The Pusan Point Science Discovery Center and Eco-Park located at Barangay Santiago, municipality of Caraga.
Pusan Point has earned its prominence at the start of the millennium as this was the place where the “First Millennium Sunrise” took place. It is where the sun shines first, a tagline adopted by Davao Oriental. It sits on a huge rock formation, 40 feet high from sea level fronting the Pacific Ocean.
Pusan Point as a tourism landmark complements the rich natural attractions, culture and history of its host town Caraga, known also as the oldest settlement in Mindanao and home to a big Mandaya tribe who have managed to preserve their unique culture and protect their natural resources.
Complementing the site’s substance, the Provincial Government has built a new tourism landmark which is highlighted by the Science Discovery Center featuring interactive and creative science exhibits such as Planetarium, a Galaxy Walk and a section that educates visitors about Astronomy, Technology, Chemistry and Energy, among others.
The Pusan Point Eco-Park on the other hand features on its grounds two old light houses, Jubilee Cross, Meditation Kiosk, Sundial, amphitheater, a 200 square meter swimming pool, jogging and promenade area, and a campsite for visitors who want to spend their nights to watch the morning sunrise the next day. The park has been beautifully landscaped to give guests a wonderful overall experience.
Roberto Alabado III, Regional Director of the Department of Tourism who was the guest of honor during the inauguration last Friday, June 3, said: “Davao Oriental has become the “most visited” province as it has never failed to give its visitors a “wow” factor. All of Davao Oriental’s eco-tourism projects are world-class. You’ve got everything here—dolphins, sea cows, sea turtles, whales, beaches, surfing and diving sites, waterfalls, caves, mountains and so many more. Everything is here that makes your province a destination, an eco-tourism destination.”
For her part, Gov. Malanyaon says that Pusan Point being the new ecotourism destination will not only bring local prestige and pride but will also provide livelihood opportunities to the local people. Inspired by the impact of her many towering legacies on tourism, Gov. Malanyaon proudly says that Davao Oriental which has kept its beauty to itself for so long a time has started to unravel its marvels to its own people and the rest of the world.
